Files & Abrasives
The final stages of shaping a sculpture made from wood, stone or the chosen medium is an important step before polishing or completion of any work.
Riffler files and cabinet rasps are used for shaping or removal of excess wood when carving, to take down a surface before sanding or to add texture. They can be used on soft stones to great effect and allow the artist to refine the final form of a sculpture in ways not possible with a hammer and chisel.
Stone rasps are large flat and very course, used in broad sweeping motions to remove excess or level a stone surface.
For harder materials like bronzes, glass and ceramic glazes diamond files can be used to clean up casting or glaze faults and are most effective when used wet.
