Metal Coating "B": Copper

Metal Coating 'B' and "C". The Metal Coatings are ground metal suspended in a non-toxic water based acrylic binder. They may be applied to both metal and non-metal surfaces such as glass, wood, ceramics, concrete, foam, and resin.
All of the Dye-Oxide Patinas, Universal Patinas, Vista Patinas, Solvent Dyes, Patina Stains, and Finishing Waxes work well with the Metal Coatings allowing endless possibilities for finishes. Among the Traditional Patinas, Liver of Sulfur (brown) and Tiffany (green) patinas work the best with the Metal Coatings.
The Metal Coatings are very durable outside (10 to 15 years) and are non-hazardous. One Gallon of Metal Coating will cover 100 square feet (this includes the recommended two layers).
The Metal Coatings are available in two different formulas - B and C. Patinas may be applied to both whether wet or dry. Once dry, either may be burnished with steel wool in order to highlight or adjust the patina. Additionally, more patina may be added after burnishing. Type C contains more metal than Type B and dries hard enough to be polished with a polishing wheel. Type C comes bundled with a catalyst and hardener.
Type B is available in brass, bronze, copper, darkened iron, gold, iron, pewter, and silver and is sold in 8oz., 16oz., 32oz., 1 gal., and 5 gal. sizes. Type C is available in brass, bronze, copper, darkened iron, gold, iron, and silver and is sold in 8oz., 16oz., 1 gal., and 5 gal. sizes.
When applying the Metal Coatings to ferrous metals (iron, steel, and aluminum), a primer must be used to protect the underlying metal.

These metal finishing products are suitable for finishing resin, plaster, or ceramic items, as well as those made from a variety of metals. The colour and visual texture of the finishes will give the impression of a solid iron, copper or bronze piece, regardless of its actual composition. This visual effect is achieved by suspending real metal powder in a transparent medium which adds depth and fixes the colour to the surface.

To achieve the most realistic effect for metal finished products, acid patina can be applied to the metal coating. He first step is to lightly polish the finish with fine wire wool. This give the surface a key for the acid to react with. When using a non-reactive patina, the surface should also be gently heated. The finish should then be allowed to cure for 24 hours before any metal protection products, such as lacquer or wax, is added.

For a more dramatic colour change, acid patina products can be applied before the metal coating has dried. Non-reactive patina products in particular may adhere better to a wet finish. Once the patination process is complete, selectively polishing the surface can create variation and highlights.

Once cured, these metal finishing products create a tough, hard surface which can resist the effects of weather making them suitable for garden ornaments and other outdoor items. On the other hand, their subtle shades and adaptability means they work just as well on delicate indoor pieces. A fine way to achieve a unique and personal metal finishing effect.

Instructions for use:
Mix well before applying. When using on iron, steel, galvanized/zinc, or aluminium, first apply an acid resistant primer to the clean metal. We recommend Sculpt Nouveau's Prime-It since it is acid resistant and very durable. Wait 24 hours, after last application of Prime-It, to apply the first coat of Metal Coating. The Metal Coatings may be applied by any technique such as air sprayer, sponge, brush, etc. Always apply at least two coats allowing some drying time in-between. The drying time will vary depending on the weather. If spraying coating on with an air gun type sprayer, the coating must first be filtered. A Traditional Patina (oxidizer) must be applied to the final coat of Metal Coating while the coating is still wet. Allow time for the Traditional Patina to react. If the coating is completely dry, you can burnish it with 0000 steel wool to expose the metal, and then apply the patina. It may not react as well when applying on dry metal coating. If using a Non-Traditional Patina, you may apply it while the coating is dry or almost dry. Wait a full 12 hours before applying a protective sealer. As with a piece of metal, apply a sealer will protect and prevent unwanted changes. If you are unsatisfied with your finished piece you can always apply more Metal Coating over the top, even if there is a clear sealer. Repeat the Metal Coating/Patina process. Metal Coatings cannot be applied over wax.
